Step 16: Interior Doors and Trim

October 2018

Now we're starting to get to some of the finishing touches. We were going for a Craftsman-esque look, but a more simple style, not with elaborate moldings or anything. Since it's a lakehouse, we wanted to keep it casual, not traditional at all.

So, we chose simple Shaker cabinets:

 and simple Shaker/Craftsman doors:

and simple door/window trim:

Our neighbor asked me about the trim sticking out an inch on the sides, thinking the trim guy messed up...

Don't worry; it's intentional. It's kind of a variation of Craftsman style, since we don't have the ceiling height to do stacked molding. So, we went even simpler, but to give it a little character, we did a 1" overhang, which has been fairly popular lately in simple, casual homes. I hope it's not one of those things we regret in 10 years because it was trendy at the time.

Here are a few shots of the molding, not every room, because that would be a bit redundant:

(upstairs master)

(window and side "front door" on left and office door on right)

(downstairs master: walk-in closet, linen closet, bathroom doors)

There are a LOT of doors in this house. Like, seriously.

(doorway only, with no door, to small hallway to downstairs master)

(girl's room - entrance and closet doors)

(great room downstairs)

You'll probably be able to see the trim better once there is actual paint on the walls, not just drywall and spackle.

We also got a beautiful Craftsman style banister for the stairs. Again, going for casual, not too formal/traditional:

So, this is the first time the stairs will be up to code and safe in 32 years!

AND our amazing cabinet guy came back and surprised us with his own custom molding on the cabinets to go with the rest of the simple style, since we said we didn't want the typical crown molding:

The pictures don't do it justice. It's GORGEOUS. And just what I wanted, but didn't know how to ask for. I told him he's a rockstar. Almost Anything Woodworks.

Can't wait to see that molding pop with some paint!
