Step 15: Kitchen Cabinets
October 2018
If you've followed all the posts up until now, you know that the kitchen and mudroom are in the new addition. But, for some perspective on how much bigger the new kitchen will be than the old one, I'll bring you back to the before pictures of the old kitchen.
kitchen/dining area/downstairs bath: this whole area will all become just dining area!
Closeup on the lovely original cabinets. The one on the top right and the sink cabinet are actually METAL. The sink and the cabinet under it are all one piece, actually. That's pretty antique-ish, but the thrift store wasn't interested, so we tossed it. The open shelving to the right (above) was added on my by grandpa in the 80s when he added on the second story, I think mostly to have a place to put that amazing new invention... the microwave! I think he also added the open shelving for the glasses (below). Total modern farmhouse - way ahead of its time.
If you need 'almost anything' built, we highly recommend him!!

This is the area to the right of the fridge, a 'pantry' and a 'mudroom' - a place to hang mops and brooms and stuff:
So, again, for scale, the old kitchen (after they took out the fridge and stove):
ANNNDDDD.... the new kitchen (cabinets not yet painted or finished with crown molding):
This is standing in the dining area looking into the new addition. So the wall in the foreground is where that door and window were in the before picture above. The old kitchen cabinets would be on your right and the old fridge and bathroom would be on your left. Look at all that cabinet space!!!! There will also be an island that will be installed later.
LEFT: The area for the new fridge and look at all that pantry on the right - waaaayyyy bigger than the original few open shelves! Through the doorway on the right, you can see the mudroom cabinets too. We'll get to that in a minute.
RIGHT: sink under the window, dishwasher to the right. Lots and lots of cabinet space. There is more just on this side wall than there was in the whole kitchen before!!
MUDROOM
LEFT of entry: washer/dryer and tons of cabinets
This is the view straight ahead when you walk in the back door of the mudroom - a small bench and more cabinet space. There is also a coat closet across from this, on your right when you walk in the door.
Hoping the place will be ready by Thanksgiving and we can cook up some nice side items and pies for the family dinner. Don't think we'll be ready to take on the whole thing yet. Actually, when we were talking with the appliance guy about whether or not to get a double oven, he said, "oh, you have to have a double oven for Thanksgiving." I told him one of the pluses of moving back near my mom was that I would never have to host Thanksgiving! We compromised and got the regular oven and a convection microwave.
Stay tuned for more pictures after we get countertops, appliances, and paint!
Cabinets beautifully handmade by a local artisan and super nice guy:
