Step 10: Blessing the House
August 2018
Before the walls went up, we wanted to do a special blessing of our new home by writing Scripture on the studs, so that underneath the walls, we would have a spiritual firm foundation.
In the Old Testament, God commands the Israelites to write the Scriptures on their hearts, their foreheads and hands, and on the doorposts of their houses and their gates (Deuteronomy 6). Some have taken this more figuratively, but many of the faithful over the centuries have taken this literally by putting small boxes called phylacteries containing Scripture on their foreheads and hands and boxes containing Scripture called mezuzah on the doorposts of their houses.
This is our version of this ancient tradition. In addition to displaying Scripture more prominently in our house once it is completed, we wrote it here on the studs, underneath the walls, as a blessing on our home and a reminder of the foundation on which we want to build our home and our family.
